how SB got started

Nike Skateboarding broke ground in March, 2002 as Nike took its big step into the $1.6 billion skateboard shoe industry. Nike made this launch with the release of 4 pairs of Nike Dunk SBs. These Dunk SBs were part of the “Artist Series” Dunks. The 4 pairs were designed by skaters Gino Iannucci, Richard Mulder, Reese Forbes, and Danny Supa.

Nike Skateboarding has been going strong for over 4 years now and has exploded in popularity. There are many sneakerheads who only live for Nike skateboarding shoes. These sneakerheads have even recieved the term SB heads, a take off on sneakerhead.

Collecting Nike Skateboarding shoes is not for the poor, thats for sure! Nike SBs sell in stores for as low as $59.99, but some of the rarest Nike SB Dunks sell for as much as $2,000! I bet no one at Nike Skateboarding ever thought that this would happen to Nike SB shoes!

For years in California, the skate culture was very popular and skateboarding shoes and clothes were worn more as casual wear than by actual skateboarders. Nike saw the potential to tapping into this market and thus launched the Nike Skateboarding line.Nike launched their skateboarding lines on the back of the Nike Dunks SB. The Nike Skateboarding Dunks were the same shape and fit as the Nike Dunks, but with several performance changes.

First of all, Nike knew that with the wear and tear of the foot, a good cushioning system was needed. Since skateboarding shoes need to have a low center of gravity, the Nike Dunks SBs had Zoom Air insoles. Next, the Nike Dunk SBs had extra padding added to the area around the ankle and to the tongue. The extra padding to the tongue did provide some extra cushioning between the top of the foot and the board, but it was more for cosmetic appearance than anything. Lastly, Nike beefed up the quality of the materials on the Nike Skateboarding Dunks. With double and triple stitching being the standard in the skateboarding shoe industry, Nike made the Dunks SBs much stronger than tradional dunks.

Nike SB captured alot of attention by releasing a pair of “Charity Dunks” which were sold on eBay. These Nike Dunk SBs were 1 of only 2 pairs in the world . The shoes were made in the eBay colors and the Nike Dunk SBs ended up selling for over $30,000! The money all went to charity, but a wise move by Nike brough millions of dollars worth of advirtising by releasing these exclusive limited Nike Dunk SBs.

All out havoc broke out in New York when there was the super rare release of the Nike Dunk SB “Pigeons.” In February 2005, a mini riot broke out at a store on New York’s Lower East Side as sneakerheads camped out in freezing temperatures for days to get the new Nike Dunk SB release, the Pigeon Dunk, for $300 a pair. When the store opened, according to the New York Post, 70 people were in line. Twenty got the shoes, the other 50 got attitudes. Police were deployed on scene before hand because many knew what would happen when news got out to the sneakerheads who waited outside in freezing temperatures for several days for nothing.
